Leon is going HAM in Requiem! 🔨⛓️ New gameplay shows leg shots, chainsaws, and visceral melees. Grace is for hiding. 😨
The divide between classic Resident Evil survival
horror and modern action couldn't be clearer than in Capcom’s upcoming title, Resident
Evil Requiem.
At a recent showcase, Capcom finally gave us a deep look at
how Leon S. Kennedy handles, and he plays like a completely different
character compared to co-star Grace Ashcroft. While Grace is stuck in the
shadows, Leon is kicking down the door—and likely the zombie behind it.
Leon’s Gameplay: Visceral, Brutal Action
When you play as Grace, you're hiding. When you play as
Leon, you're the monster.
New gameplay footage shows Leon in his element: heavy
combat. The game director, Koshi Nakanishi, described Leon’s segments as
replicating the "thrilling tension" of Resident Evil 4, which
is code for "high-octane action."
- Precision
Shooting: Leon doesn't just spray and pray. The footage shows him
shooting enemies in the legs to cripple them, finishing them off with a
brutal, physics-based kick.
- Melee
Combat: Leon is carrying a tomahawk. It’s not just for show;
you can parry incoming melee attacks and deliver a finishing blow.
- Environmental
Weapons: The ultimate highlight? Leon picking up a chainsaw off
a dead enemy and slicing a zombie clean in two.
If you were worried that Requiem would be too slow,
Leon’s campaign is the antidote.
Grace’s Gameplay: Claustrophobic Horror
In stark contrast, Grace Ashcroft’s segments are about
resource management and fear.
We already knew Grace was an FBI analyst, but the showcase
clarified her role. She navigates tight, narrow environments where ammo is
scarce. You aren't supposed to fight everyone; you're supposed to survive them.
She isn't helpless, though. Grace carries a massive revolver
simply called "Requiem." It’s powerful enough to take out
multiple enemies with a single shot, but every bullet counts.
New Mechanics: Blood Crafting and Perspective Shifts
Capcom is introducing some clever systems to tie these two
distinct styles together.
- Infected
Blood Crafting: Players will collect blood from downed enemies. You
won't be mixing herbs; you'll be using this blood to create specialized
injectors. It’s a dark, twisted take on the classic crafting system.
- Perspective
Toggle: Whether you are playing as Grace or Leon, you aren't locked
into one view. You can switch between first-person and third-person
at will.
- Saving:
In a nod to the classics, the "Standard (Classic)" difficulty
mode will require you to find and use Ink Ribbons to save your
game. If that's too stressful, "Casual" mode lets you save
whenever.
Deluxe Edition and Cloud Gaming
The Deluxe Edition was detailed as well. It’s mostly
cosmetic—costumes for Leon and Grace, weapon skins, and screen filters—but for
die-hard fans, looking good while slaying zombies is part of the fun.
In a move that’s becoming standard for Capcom, Resident
Evil Requiem will also be playable via the cloud on GeForce Now at
launch. You don't need a PS5 or a high-end PC; you just need a decent internet
connection.
Mark your calendars: Resident Evil Requiem slashes its way onto PC, PS5, Xbox Series S/X, and Nintendo Switch 2 on February 27.
