Microsoft Turns Up the Heat in AI Shopping Wars With New Copilot Features in Edge
Microsoft has officially stepped into the growing AI-driven
shopping race, joining rivals like Google, OpenAI, and Perplexity. The company
has strengthened its Copilot experience inside the Edge browser,
adding fresh shopping tools powered by artificial intelligence. These upgrades
allow Edge users not only to access Copilot’s existing product-finding
abilities but also to use a new exclusive feature designed to spot better
prices and cashback opportunities across retailers.
Edge Browser Gains Smarter AI Shopping Tools
In a detailed announcement, Roger Capriotti,
Microsoft’s GM for Edge and Search, revealed the arrival of these new additions
ahead of the busy holiday shopping season. With this rollout, Microsoft becomes
the fourth major AI player to enter the retail-focused AI space.
Users in the United States can now access Copilot’s
enhanced shopping toolkit, which includes:
- Cashback
information
- Price
comparisons across retailers
- Price
history tracking
- Product
insights & specs
- Automatic
price-drop alerts
These features appear when users browse supported shopping
websites and activate Copilot Mode. By clicking the Copilot icon, shoppers can
compare options, study product details, or set custom alerts. Natural language
prompts can further refine results, making the shopping workflow smoother and
more conversational.
New Proactive Price-Drop Alerts Across Open Tabs
Microsoft is also introducing a brand-new intelligent
feature. When users have several shopping sites open and attempt to buy an
item, Copilot will automatically check other tabs and notify them if:
- The
same product is cheaper elsewhere
- Another
retailer offers cashback or extra savings
This proactive comparison tool is currently restricted to U.S.
users.
Why Tech Giants Are Racing Into AI-Powered Shopping
The push toward AI-driven retail isn’t surprising. As
shoppers increasingly rely on AI for product discovery, recommendations, and
purchasing, major tech companies see an opportunity to transform shopping
behavior—and potentially create new revenue channels.
By helping users shop inside their platforms, these
companies also gain insight into consumer purchasing patterns. Over time, such
data can fuel more personalized shopping experiences and further monetization
opportunities.
With Microsoft’s latest move, the competition in AI commerce
is heating up, just in time for the busiest shopping season of the year.
