Comet ATLAS Splits Into Three Pieces After Sun Encounter — Rare Cosmic Breakup Caught Live
A spectacular cosmic event lit up the night sky on Monday as
Comet C/2025 K1 (ATLAS)—a visitor from the far reaches of our solar
system—was seen breaking into multiple pieces. The dramatic moment was captured
live during a special broadcast hosted by the Virtual Telescope Project,
which streamed telescopic footage starting at 10 p.m. EST on November 24
(0300 GMT on November 25).
Weather allowing, viewers were treated to rare views of the comet’s fractured
sections from Manciano, Italy.
First spotted on May 24, 2025, the icy body is
believed to have formed in the remote Oort Cloud before making its way
toward the inner solar system. Its close swing around the Sun on October 8
significantly altered its structure.
Astronomers Observe the Breakup of Comet ATLAS
A report from the Virtual Telescope Project revealed that on
November 11, astronomers detected the comet splitting into at least three
prominent fragments. Experts suggest the breakup was likely caused by
extreme solar heating, which weakened the comet’s core as it neared the Sun.
Unlike the interstellar visitor 3I/ATLAS, this object belongs to our
solar system and was discovered through NASA’s ATLAS survey program.
Although the comet remains faint to the naked eye,
skywatchers using small telescopes may be able to locate it near the Big
Dipper, especially with longer exposure imaging.
This close approach is giving scientists an opportunity to
study how comets behave under intense solar radiation. The livestream showed
the broken pieces in real time, offering both beautiful visuals and educational
insight.
