“Netflix Removes Casting Support for Many Smart TVs — Users Report Cast Icon Disappearing”

Mobile-to-TV Casting Feature Removed for Many Users

Netflix appears to be phasing out one of its long-standing conveniences: casting content directly from the mobile app to newer Chromecast models and Google TV streaming devices. While the company hasn’t issued a formal announcement, an updated support page and growing user reports reveal that the feature is being rolled back.

Across social platforms, users have noticed the sudden disappearance of the familiar Cast icon in the Netflix mobile app over the past few days. This change particularly affects subscribers on non-ad-supported plans, as casting was never available for the ad tier.

Casting Removal Confirmed Through Updated Support Page

Casting traditionally allowed viewers to start Netflix on their smartphone and seamlessly push it onto a compatible TV—helpful for smart TVs with limited storage or for those who prefer navigating through their phone instead of a remote.

However, Netflix’s support page now states:

“Netflix no longer supports casting shows from a mobile device to most TVs and TV-streaming devices. You’ll need to use your TV or streaming device’s remote to navigate Netflix.”

This update, first spotted by Android Authority, confirms the quiet rollback.

Users Report Inconsistent Casting Availability

Some users—including journalists from Gadgets 360—have already lost the Cast icon entirely, while others still see it, suggesting the removal may be rolling out gradually.

According to Netflix, older Chromecast devices and TVs with native Google Cast support will continue to offer casting, but newer Chromecast hardware and the Google TV Streamer are excluded.

Two weeks prior, Reddit user u/DavidinCincinnati posted that the cast option had vanished from his app. Many others chimed in with similar experiences. Another user, u/freetherabbit, claimed that Netflix customer support told him:

“If the device has its own remote, you can’t cast.”

This aligns with Netflix’s apparent shift toward native app usage.

Ad-Supported Tier Still Has No Casting

It’s worth noting that Netflix’s ad-supported plan has never allowed casting, and this latest rollback does not change that limitation. The update primarily affects users on premium tiers who previously enjoyed mobile-to-TV casting as a standard feature.
