Google Gemini May Soon Get ‘Projects’ Workspace Feature — Similar to ChatGPT’s Tool
Google may soon introduce a powerful productivity upgrade to
its Gemini platform, according to a new report. The feature, named Projects,
appears to mirror the workflow-focused Projects tool that OpenAI unveiled in
late 2024. Designed as a dedicated workspace within Gemini, it would allow
users to organise multiple conversations, files, and tasks under a single
topic. While the feature is still under development, early clues suggest that
Google is preparing for an official rollout.
Gemini’s ‘Projects’ Feature Spotted in Latest Google App Beta
An investigation by Android Authority reveals that
the feature has been quietly in the works for several months. The latest beta
version of the Google app (v16.48.54.sa.arm64) contains the interface elements
and menu structure for Projects, even though the feature remains unavailable
for both regular and beta users.
During an APK teardown, the publication managed to manually
enable the feature. However, Gemini is not yet activating it from Google's
servers, meaning it cannot be fully used.
Early Look at Gemini’s Project Workspace
Screenshots shared in the report show an onboarding panel
titled “Stay organised with Projects.” Key functions highlighted
include:
- Organising
chat threads by topic
- Setting
a “focus area’’ or guiding instructions for Gemini
- Uploading
files to build clearer context for the project
- Creating
contained workspaces that behave like mini sandboxes
Upon entering a new Project, users would first assign it a
name. They’re then taken to a central dashboard where goals, focus details, and
reference materials can be added. This allows Gemini to better understand the
direction and intent of each workspace.
Limitations Revealed During Testing
One limitation noted in the teardown is a cap of 10 file
uploads per Project. It’s unclear whether paid Gemini tiers (such as Pro or
Ultra) will offer higher limits. If unchanged, this restriction might reduce
the practicality of Projects for research-heavy or file-intensive tasks.
Users will reportedly be able to view all their Projects
from a side panel and pin the ones they use frequently for faster access.
Not Official Yet — Details May Change
Since all discoveries come from an APK teardown,
these features are not final. Google has not confirmed or announced Projects
publicly. Until an official rollout takes place, all information should be
considered subject to change.
