Gemini AI Now Rolling Out Inside Google Maps for All Navigation Modes

Gemini Officially Steps In as Maps’ New AI Assistant

Google appears to be moving forward with its plan to make Gemini the main AI assistant within Google Maps. After announcing the transition earlier this month, the company is now reportedly enabling Gemini inside the Maps app, giving users the ability to control navigation, look up locations, and share arrival times — all through natural voice commands.

Gemini Arrives Inside Google Maps

According to a report from 9to5Google, Gemini has started appearing in Maps for some users, though the rollout seems limited for now. The feature was spotted on a single device tied to one account, and wider availability has yet to be confirmed.
Gadgets 360 also noted that the feature wasn’t visible across multiple devices at the time of checking.

Google has quietly updated its official support documentation to reflect the change, stating that Gemini will now work across all navigation modes — including driving, walking, and two-wheeler routes — instead of being restricted to Driving mode.

How to Use Gemini in Google Maps

Google says the process is simple and fully hands-free:

  1. Open Google Maps on your Android phone or tablet
  2. Enter navigation mode
  3. Say “Hey Google” or tap the microphone icon
  4. Ask Gemini to assist

The AI pulls from the language and voice preferences linked to the user’s Google account, and these settings can be changed at any time.

New AI Skills Improve Hands-Free Navigation

The addition of Gemini is meant to reduce the need for memorizing specific commands. Users can phrase instructions naturally — for example, asking the AI to translate a message, locate a petrol pump on the way, or suggest a good place to eat nearby.

Gemini can also:

  • Share ETA with contacts
  • Trigger the conversational Gemini Live mode
  • Offer recommendations with complex, multi-step instructions
  • Report road issues like accidents, flooding, or traffic delays with simple phrases like
    • “I see an accident”
    • “It looks flooded ahead”
  • Sync with Google Calendar to add or update events
  • Read news or sports updates without requiring screen interaction

These upgrades are aimed at making navigation safer and more intuitive, especially for drivers who prefer uninterrupted focus on the road.
