WhatsApp’s Latest Beta Brings Custom Group Member Tags for Easier Identification
WhatsApp appears to be experimenting with a fresh feature
aimed at making group conversations more organized and easier to navigate. A
new update, available to a limited set of Android beta testers, introduces the
ability for users to attach personalised tags to their names inside specific
groups. These tags—up to 30 characters in length—are meant to offer quick
identification and clarify each member’s role or purpose within that group.
Custom Tags for Members: What’s Being Tested
A report from WABetaInfo indicates that the feature is part
of the WhatsApp beta for Android version 2.25.17.42. With this addition,
users will be able to assign a tag to themselves in any group they belong to,
whether new or existing. These tags can describe anything from professional
titles to hobbies or even the tasks a person handles within the group.
Examples include:
- Coach
- Project
Manager
- Moderator
The platform is keeping things straightforward: tags are
fully user-controlled and do not require approval from group admins.
Rules and Limitations for Tags
WhatsApp has also set a few boundaries to maintain clarity
and avoid misuse:
- Tags
can contain up to 30 characters
- Special
characters, links, and checkmarks are not allowed
- Users
can edit or update their tag anytime
- Tags
stay visible only in the group where they were applied
- They
remain intact even if the user reinstalls WhatsApp or switches devices
At the moment, this feature is only available to users who
are part of WhatsApp’s beta program. A broader rollout is expected once testing
is complete.
How to Add or Edit a Group Tag on WhatsApp
If you’re among the beta testers, here’s how you can add
your custom tag:
Step 1: Open WhatsApp on your Android device and
enter the desired group.
Step 2: Open the Group Info section and tap your name in the
member list.
Step 3: Type in the tag you want to use.
Step 4: Save your changes. The tag will instantly appear next to your
name for all group members to see.
