OpenAI Updates ChatGPT: Advanced Voice Mode Now Works Inside the Chat Interface
OpenAI has introduced a major usability improvement to
ChatGPT by integrating its Advanced Voice Mode directly inside the main
chat screen. Previously, starting a voice conversation pushed users into a
separate full-screen window. With the latest update, voice interactions now
take place alongside the regular text interface, allowing users to speak to ChatGPT
while still viewing messages, visuals, or content generated during the
conversation.
Voice Mode Now Works Seamlessly Within the Chat Interface
In an announcement shared on X, OpenAI revealed a redesigned
experience for its real-time voice feature. Advanced Voice Mode enables
natural, two-way conversations where ChatGPT responds with human-like tone,
pitch, and expression.
The feature originally launched in July 2024 for paid users
before expanding to free users in August 2025. Until now, activating Voice Mode
switched to a dedicated full-screen view, which limited how much of the
conversation users could see.
With the new update, the entire interaction—including voice replies, text output, images, and links—happens right inside the chat window.
You can now use ChatGPT Voice right inside chat—no separate mode needed.

What the Update Enables for Users
This new setup brings several advantages:
1. Messages Stay Visible During Voice Chats
Users can now follow the conversation visually, review
ChatGPT’s responses, or scroll back while still speaking with the assistant.
2. AI Can Display Visual Aids in Real Time
Maps, diagrams, product suggestions, or results from the
Shopping Research tool can appear without interrupting the voice session.
3. Image Generation Without Leaving Voice Mode
Users can ask ChatGPT to create images, inspect them, and
request edits—all without ending the voice conversation.
4. New Possibilities Like Voice-Based Coding
Developers and learners can now code hands-free through
spoken instructions without switching interfaces.
Prefer the Old Full-Screen Mode? It’s Still Available
OpenAI has kept the previous layout for those who want it.
To switch back:
- Open
the menu (three-line icon on top left).
- Tap

- Open
the Voice settings.
