OpenAI Rolls Out ChatGPT Group Chats Globally — Now Available for All Users
OpenAI has officially begun rolling out Group Chats in
ChatGPT across the globe, opening the door for multi-person conversations
assisted by the AI chatbot. The feature, which debuted on November 14 in select
regions—Japan, New Zealand, South Korea, and Taiwan—has now been made available
to every logged-in ChatGPT user.
In a statement, the company said the limited rollout performed well, prompting
the broader release.
Group Chats Now Accessible to All ChatGPT Users
OpenAI confirmed the global expansion in a post on X, noting
that the feature is active for users on Free, Go, Plus, and Pro plans.
Gadgets 360 staff also verified that the option is live and fully functional.
Starting a group is simple:
- Tap
the group icon in the upper-right corner of the interface.
- ChatGPT
automatically creates a shareable link, allowing the creator to
invite others instantly.
Once inside, participants can chat normally, tag ChatGPT for
help, or rely on the AI to respond contextually when needed. Reactions, inline
replies, and threaded responses are also supported.
How ChatGPT Functions Inside Group Conversations
ChatGPT behaves like an additional participant. It can:
- Respond
when tagged
- Follow
the ongoing discussion
- Provide
information or guidance based on context
Group chats are displayed in a new section on the sidebar,
where users can manage or delete groups via a quick menu.
Users can also turn an existing one-on-one conversation
into a group. In this case, ChatGPT creates a duplicate of the original chat
and transforms the copy into a group space, so the personal chat continues
separately without disruption.
Custom Instructions, Roles, and Management Tools
Every group can be fine-tuned through custom instructions,
allowing participants to guide ChatGPT’s behavior specifically for that room.
These instructions apply only to that particular group and nowhere else across
the user’s account.
Management features include:
- Group
creator can add or remove members
- Any
member can rename the group
- Members
can mute notifications
With these controls, ChatGPT’s group spaces function more
like collaborative chat rooms than simple AI conversations.
